Tàpies, Antoni

Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona from 1923 to 2012) is one of the leading artists of the twentieth century worldwide. A prominent member of informality, Tàpies is painter and sculptor as well as art theorist.

Tàpies was born into a cultured middle-class family who had been part of a publishing and book-selling tradition that awoke in him an early love of books. He spent an increasing amount of time on drawing and painting and ended up abandoning his law studies to devote himself to them fully.

Tàpies soon expressed an interest in matter -earth, dust, atoms and particles- which took the shape of the use of materials foreign to academic artistic expression and experiments with new techniques. In the early eighties, his interest in canvas as a support took on renewed strength and he also seems to have a heightened interest in Eastern culture. The works of the last years are, most of all, a reflection on pain - both physical and spiritual - understood as an integral part of life.

Tàpies’s work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world: MoMA and Guggenheim Museum of Nueva York, Centro Cultural Arte Contemporáneo of Mexico, Hara Museum of Art Tokio, Meadows Museum of Dallas, Museo Reina Sofía of Madrid, Neues Museum of Nürnberg, Fundaçao Serralves of Oporto, Palau de Belles Arts of Pekin and Musee Picasso of Antibes, among others.
